A Brief Overview of Conservative Baptist History
On May 17, 1947 the Conservative Baptist Association was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
This denomination was formed by a group of churches and individuals who had been part of the American Baptist Association. The Conservative Baptists came into being out of a concern for “conserving” and standing by certain doctrinal “truths” that had been part of Christianity for centuries. Consequently they adopted the name “Conservative Baptist”. The conservative Baptists came out of the American Baptist Association because the American Baptists were not requiring people being sent out as missionaries to formally state that they supported key Biblical beliefs. These five key beliefs were fundamental basic doctrines derived directly from the Bible that the church had stood by for centuries. These five beliefs included: (1) the virgin birth of Christ, (2) the inerrancy of the scriptures, (3) the physical resurrection. (4) Christ’s substitutionary atonement, and (5) the imminent physical, second coming of Christ. For a
time after the split, Conservative Baptists were content to form a new missionary society to address the need that missionaries agree to basic Christian doctrines. Eventually the
missionary society and the Conservative Baptist Association (CBA) became two separate
organizations. Today there are over 1100 Conservative Baptist Churches in Americana and over 250 in the Northwest Association (NWCBA).
